Mozart Bicycle Track: our trip tip of the month

Mittwoch, Juli 14th 2010

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart left his mark everywhere in Salzburg. The Mozart Bicycle Track now connects the most important historic sites throughout Austria and Bavaria, snaking through towns and fantastic landscapes.

Road Map of the Mozart Bicycle Track

Your tour starts in Salzburg’s old town, where you will find Mozart’s birthplace and family house. Continuing to pilgrim’s church of Maria Plain, famous location of the world premiere of Mozart’s Coronation Mass in 1779.

Next stop should definitely be picturesque St. Gilgen where Mozart’s mother and sister “Nannerl” were born.

Another highlight of the Mozart Bicycle Track is Salzburg’s Lake District. After pedalling from Henndort to Neumarkt am Wallersee we recommend a stay in Gasthaus Gerbl inn, a former tavern for couriers that Mozart sometimes paid a stopover.

After dropping by the Schaudorf Schleedorf you should really not miss the beautiful village of Mattsee, including the monastery, the little palace and a folklore museum.

My personal tip: take your swim suit with you, as Mattsee lake is beautifully situated and exactly what you need to get back on your bike fully refreshed. Next stop: Obertrum am See, where beer enthusiasts can pay a visit to one of Austria’s few privately owned micro-breweries, Brauerei Sigl and fuel their energy for the next stretch.

Further west, right on the bridge between Oberndorf and Laufen, the bavarian part of the Mozart Bicycle Track commences, leading you to Waginger See, Chiemsee lake and Seeon convent where Mozart often visited and even worked on his opuses.

Past Wasserburg, where Mozart took a break from a three-year-journey to London and Paris, the Mozart Bicycle Track follows the river Inn upstream towards Rosenheim and back across the Austrian border into Tirol.

Points of interest during your Bicycle Track

Points of interest for Mozart enthusiasts are Waidring and Lofer, where Mozart lodged overnight at the Gasthof zur Post Inn, as well as Bad Reichenhall, the first stop of Mozart’s choice when on his way to Italy. The last stretch of the Mozart Bicycle Track will treat you to the breathtaking landscape of Königssee and past Hellbrunn Palace back to Salzburg.

Why not spending your deserved break in Amadehotel after that? After all, our Salzburg hotel is located only minutes away from Hellbrunn Palace. Please contact us for any enquiries.

Some Mozart Bicycle Track facts:

  • Full distance appx. 450km/280 miles
  • You prefer your tour to be more relaxing? Then just take the short cuts between St. Lorenz and Köstendorf, Laufen and Kössen as well as Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg.
  • The Mozart Bicycle Track mainly consists of tarmac roads, 90% being cycle tracks and very calm minor roads.
  • Plan for a time budget between ten days and two weeks for a full circle (40 km/25 miles/day)
  • Between Niederndorf and Salzburg the Mozart Bicycle Track can become hilly, so the distance you will be able to manage might decrease.
